The Hunt, a satirical horror movie, exploring the story of “liberal elitists” who go after people supporting President Donald Trump and kill them, was supposed to be released in theaters later this year — that will not happen.
In the film’s storyline produced by Jason Blum‘s Blumhouse Productions, the victims were rounded up from red states supporting the president and brought to specially-created hunting preserves.
The premise resembles that of various other mega Hollywood productions, (The Hunger Games/ The Purge) — minus the Trump element — and it did not seem to be anything particularly new under the sun.
After President Trump learned about the film’s release, he posted a critical tweet towards it, claiming that it was going to “inflame and cause chaos.”
He said in a tweet: “The movie coming is made in order to inflame and cause chaos. They create their own violence and then try to blame others.”
Trump added: “They are the true Racists, and are very bad for our Country!”
The film was already surrounded by some controversy in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio; but Trump’s comment unleashed even more backlash.
Many started to comment negatively on the film, claiming that it should never reach a public release. While the producers were quiet at first, it was eventually announced the scheduled release was canceled.
Here is the cast for The Hunt.
An official statement indicated that the studio understood that “now is not the right time to release this film,” implying that there is still hope for those who want to see in the future.
The statement read: “We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller. But we understand that now is not the right time to release this film.”
Perhaps after the 2020 presidential election, The Hunt might see daylight. Many took to social media to share their thoughts on the cancellation.
A Trump supporter gleefully said this: “Today Universal decided to put this film where it belongs…in the trash. It’s scrapped. Toast. Bye-bye. So all the true violence worshippers and hypocrites will have to go out of there way to watch it, cuz it AINT hitting theaters near you ???Liberals being worse than nazi SS in 1940’s Germany. Hollyweird at it again.”
This moviegoer explained his point of view: “It was ok when rich whites were hunting poor blacks in The Purge but when now it’s no fun when the rabbits have the guns aka Blacks hunting deplorable whites is a no-no ?”
Another Trump backer said this about what is going on in society: “A movie about killing people you people are less than because of their views? Cool. This is what’s wrong with our country.”
However, this anti-Trump social media user slammed the filmmaker for caving: “The real fact of the matter is Hollywood is now becoming our government for the last 35 years it’s getting worse and worse and this what is really making USA a joke of the world and the fact the Kardashians are better known than sitting members of the government that a really making the world a better place proves that it’s all who you know in politics not what you know.”
This person brought up violent video games into the conversation: “This is so stupid. They made FOUR Purge movies plus a tv show and not a word uttered on it. This looks like it would be an awesome movie, and this whole “video games and movies cause violence” bullshit is absolutely ridiculous and insulting. ? The studio executives are a bunch of cowards who canceled it before it even came out. Everyone is so freaking sensitive nowadays.”
Some have pointed out that Trump played himself by getting the movie release canceled. At its core, the movie is slightly pro-Trump by turning the “deplorables” into people that are chased by mean progressive elites.
