There have been rumors swirling around Nicole Kidman‘s failed marriage to Tom Cruise for many years.
Many people, including Leah Remini, point to Cruise’s religion, while others think that it might have been linked to some kind of mental infidelity that inspired their hit movie, Eyes Wide Shut, from director Stanley Kubrick.
As a devout Scientologist, Cruise will not talk about his life with reporters, but Kidman is a free woman who has moved on with her life and husband Keith Urban, and during interviews, she tackles various topics, including a few private ones.
Recently, the Australian actress sat down with New York Times magazine, where she dispelled one of the wildest rumors about her romance with the famous action star.
Cruise and his then-wife starred in Eyes Wide Shut — the critically-acclaimed yet controversial movie followed Dr. Bill Harford, played by Cruise, whose mental well-being is shaken when his wife, Alice, portrayed by Kidman, confesses that she had contemplated having an affair with a younger man.
Kidman’s character said in the thriller: “He glanced at me as he walked past, just a glance, nothing more. But I could hardly move. That afternoon Helena (the couple’s daughter in the film) went to the movie with her friend, and you and I made love, and we made plans about our future, and we talked about Helena and yet at no time was he ever out of my mind. And I thought that if he wanted me, even if it was only for one night, I was ready to give up everything.”
The mystery psychological drama film came out in 1999 while Kidman and Cruise’s 11-year marriage ended in 2001. The mother of four explained that despite what the media has been saying, she was happily married at the time.
She explained: “That fits the narrative that people came up with, but I definitely didn’t see it like that. We were happily married through that.”
Kidman made a rare move by giving intimate details about her romance with Cruise. She revealed that she used to go go-kart racing after filming the thriller with her then-husband.
She revealed: “We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”
Some of her fans say they were always a mismatch, and others wonder, will she ever open up about the Church of Scientology?
