Michelle Obama is planning to meet King Charles III and his wife, Camilla, Queen Consort, shortly, and she has already mapped out how things will go.
The former first lady recently took part in a promotional tour to push her second book, The Light We Carry.
Barack Obama‘s wife made an appearance on BBC where she reminisced on her meeting with the late Queen Elizabeth II, the headline-making faux pas that occurred, and all the necessary changes that would be put in place when she is face-to-face with King Charles.
The journalist asked the attorney and author about the fact that she caused a media frenzy by touching Queen Elizabeth and will she hug King Charles when they meet.
The reporter inquired: “There was a huge reaction when you broke protocol and hugged the Queen. Would you hug the King?”
The former first lady of the United States said she does not plan to repeat her past mistakes with the new King.
This time around, she will wait to see if the Monarch approaches her for a hug. The famous Democrat revealed: “I would stand down until I was touched. Or hugged.”
Michelle Obama opened in her first book, Becoming, about the moment she hugged and gently placed her hand on the Queen’s back after sharing a joke about their pretty yet painful shoes.
The talented orator wrote: “The Queen glanced down at the pair of black Jimmy Choos I was wearing. She shook her head. ‘These shoes are unpleasant, are they not?’ she said. She gestured with some frustration at her own black pumps. I confessed then to the Queen that my feet were hurting. She confessed that hers hurt, too. The Queen “busted out with a fully charming laugh; I affectionately placed her hand on the royal’s shoulder out of instinct. But was not aware that I was committing what would be deemed an epic faux pas.”
Obama concluded that Queen Elizabeth appreciated the kind gesture. She wrote: “If I hadn’t done the proper thing at Buckingham Palace, I had at least done the human thing. I daresay the Queen was OK with it too because when I touched her, she pulled closer, resting a gloved hand lightly on the small of my back.”
Many believe that King Charles and his spouse will have Barack Obama and Michelle Obama at the coronation ceremony in May, where a lovely exchange will take place.
The power couple has a deep appreciation for the Royal Family and Queen Elizabeth II. They have spoken about the royals with love and respect in multiple interviews.
Additionally, the optics and the opportunity of having the first African-American president of the United States at the ceremony are certainly on King Charles’s mind.
The King is trying to make the monarchy more inclusive amid Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s racism revelation, the resignation of Susan Katharine Hussey, Baroness Hussey of North Bradley, a Buckingham Palace staffer and close friend of Queen Camilla.
Lady Hussey, Prince William’s godmother, has quit her post and apologized for making “deep and regrettable” racist remarks to a Black activist, Ngozi Fulani.
Thanks to his unique background and years as a politician, Barack Obama, an expert on race-related matters, could certainly educate and guide King Charles on the sensitive topic.
