Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis issued an apology video, but many are wondering if it is too late for their fun-loving wholesome brand.
This week, the hammer came down on Danny Masterson who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women.
The actor reached out to 50 friends and family members to write letters backing his character, hoping the court would grant leniency.
Among those who penned heartfelt letters backing Masterson were Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. The power couple was obliterated on social media for the letter so they released an apology to the people they hurt.
Kutcher and Kunis also took the opportunity to defend themselves. Kutcher began by saying that he was aware that his decision to vouch for her friend caused much pain.
He said: “We are aware of the pain that has been caused by the character letters we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson.”
Kunis jumped in to say: “We support victims. We have done this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future. The letters were not written to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or the validity of the jury’s ruling.”
Kunis concluded their message by talking to the victims. The mother of two stated: “Our heart goes out to every single person who’s ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse or rape.”
The duo has decided to close the comments to avoid further backlash. Kutcher and Kunis are heavily involved in several organizations that combat sex trafficking.
In her letter defending convicted rapist Danny Masterson, Mila Kunis described him as a wonderful father and loving husband.
She wrote: “Throughout our time together, Danny has proven to be an amazing friend, confidant, and, above all, an outstanding older brother figure to me. His caring nature and ability to offer guidance have been instrumental in my growth both personally and professionally.”
While the victims claimed that the famous Scientologist was a rapist who drugged women before sexually assaulting them.
Kutcher stated that he is a philanthropist who helped first responders who became ill after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Kutcher wrote: “I do not believe he is an ongoing harm to society and having his daughter raised without a present father would be a tertiary injustice in and of itself.”
Ashton Kutcher and his wife have been bashed on social media for their involvement in this controversial matter. Many fans have threatened to boycott them and have lost all respect for them.
Actress Chrissie Carnell Bixler, one of three women who accused Masterson of rape, took to Instagram to slam Kunis and Kutcher for being “just as sick” as their friend.
Bixler slammed Kutcher by writing: “I heard the plan. In my opinion, you’re just as sick as your ‘mentor.”
She called out Kunis with these words: “If that’s what you view as a normal relationship with a ‘big brother figure’ then I feel very sad for you, and I hope you consider getting into therapy. You all must forget I was there the whole time those first 5 years of That 70’s Show. I remember everything.”
The power couple hopes the controversy will disappear.
