As Prince Harry was airing his grievances, he revealed that his relationship with his father, King Charles III, was difficult from the start.
In the book Spare, The Duke of Sussex revealed on the day of his birth, his father declared that his job was done because he produced an heir and a spare.
He wrote: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare – my work is done.” Meghan Markle‘s husband claimed that the term defined and belittled him his entire life.
According to the book, Prince Harry felt inferior to his brother, Prince William, because of his place in the line of succession.
Via The Mirror and The Guardian, it was revealed that Prince Harry has always been “resentful of his nickname, and aired his frustration in his memoir.”
The newspaper said: “Harry’s resentment of being the ‘spare’ is the underlying theme of his book, through chapters on his childhood, his schooling, his career as a royal and in the British Army, his relationship with his parents and brother, and his life with Meghan through courtship, wedding, and marriage, to their own experience of parenthood.”
Prince Harry’s profound sentiment of resentment popped up in the media ahead of his meeting with his father. Prince Harry and King Charles have agreed to meet in the upcoming weeks.
The King has invited his youngest son to Scotland with his family because he wants to bond with his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Prince Harry is also hoping to see his father during the London celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. Prince Harry’s unresolved issues with his ailing father will arise during their face-to-face meeting.
A source told The Mirror: “Harry’s first priority when he comes to England is to see his sick dad. He is pretty focused on this. It will be his first port of call when he comes off the plane to try to spend as much time with King Charles so that they can build bridges and enjoy each other’s company like before.”
The person went on to explain how Prince Harry will deal with the tension that will be in the air, by saying: “Harry knows it will be awkward, but it’s a time to put pride and differences to one side. He is coming over for his charity work, which is so important to him, so he will juggle his schedule accordingly, but seeing his dad will come first. He wants the family to get back to the way they were and is going to be making an extra effort with his brother Wills too, as difficult as it may be. Now, more than ever, with Kate’s cancer diagnosis too, Harry wants them to know he is there for them.”
The prince wants to reconnect with his roots.
