While protecting Kate Middleton, Prince William has spoken publicly for the first time about allegations of racism made by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
Harry and his wife made the claims towards the royal family in their interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired earlier this week.
Meghan Markle also revealed that Kate Middleton made her cry during her wedding after having a heated exchange.
On Thursday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited a school in London to talk about mental health.
Many were surprised to see Prince William at the event because it was previously announced that it was a solo appearance by Kate Middleton.
Prince William, who was aware that Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, could get potentially painful and humiliating questions about the revelations made by Meghan Markle, decided to accompany his wife to shield her.
Royal fans applauded Prince William for protecting Kate.
A supporter of the Cambridges made this comment: “That melts my heart! I actually had a lump in my throat when I saw him right there beside her despite not having been expected there. That is why the Cambridges get so much love. They are authentic in every way and they protect each other no matter what. 👏❤❤🙏”
Another emotional fan called the future king of England a gentleman and added: “He is a true gentleman. Harry whines that he was embarrassed and did nothing to help his struggling wife, ( I don’t believe her claims,) whereas William realizes that a problem may occur and steps straight up to support the woman he loves. And I don’t believe for one second that Catherine made meg cry. A lovely lady, kind, gentle, and respectful of other’s feelings. Thank heavens that the Queen has these pair to rely on.”
This social media user shared: “William, standing by his wife, protecting her as best he can, telling everyone his got her back. And, he’s not backing down!”
During the outing, Prince William was hit with a question about the claims made by his brother and stated, “we’re very much not a racist family.”
In Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah, allegations were made against unnamed members of the royal family regarding their son, Archie‘s skin color before he was born.
Other shocking allegations included claims that the royal family ignored Meghan’s cries for help when she was pregnant and suffering from her mental health issues to the point of feeling suicidal.
It was the first time the Cambridges had appeared in public since the interview and were promoting the Mentally Healthy Schools project launched in 2018.
Royal experts say the engagement would have been planned weeks ago, and its links to mental health would not have been influenced by the Sussexes’ interview.
Royal engagements are not currently being announced in advance to prevent crowds gathering due to coronavirus.
Prince William denied the royal family is racist after being asked outright by a reporter, “is the royal family a racist family?”
In a follow-up question about whether he has spoken to Prince Harry since the interview, Prince William said he had not but “will do.”
His move to speak publicly regarding the interview indicated the current strength of feeling in the royal household.
Queen Elizabeth II and Buckingham Palace released an official statement on Tuesday responding to the interview, sharing their “concern” over the issues raised and pledging to deal with them “privately.”
